Mission statement

The central hub for everything Monero.

XMR Hub exists to be the one place for Monero: buying, swapping, using, mining and reading about it.

We want to be the catalyst for the Monero revolution. Whether you've never touched crypto or you've been here for years, it should be easy to learn more, buy some, and see how simple Monero really is.

As a community we've faced delistings, FUD and setbacks. We keep building anyway, because privacy wins in the end.

What is Monero?

Monero (XMR) is a cryptocurrency built for private payments. Its blockchain hides who sent a payment, who received it and how much moved, using ring signatures, stealth addresses and confidential transactions, so balances and payment histories are not public the way they are on Bitcoin.

It launched in 2014 with no premine and is mined with RandomX, an algorithm made for ordinary computer processors. People use it to pay for goods and services, to send money across borders and to keep their finances out of public view.

Learn MoneroWhy Monero

How is the XMR exchange rate calculated?

The rate comes from CoinGecko, which averages Monero's price across the exchanges that trade it, weighted by volume. XMR Hub's server asks for XMR in US dollars, euros, pounds, bitcoin, ether, gold and silver at most once a minute and shares that answer with every visitor, and this page asks for the newest one every minute while it is open. USDT is the dollar price divided by Tether's own dollar price; pairs without Monero are worked out through XMR.

These are indicative market prices, not offers to trade. The time under the converter shows when the price was last updated. If the feed falls behind, the converter says how old the rate is; after six hours without fresh data it shows no rate at all. Everything you type stays in your browser.

Everything Monero, in one place.

Guides, a short course, the deep tech and the reasons why. Pick a section: each one is a short page, nothing to dig for.

The basics, in order

Nine short guides, start at one.

01

What is Monero?

Get a simple introduction to Monero and why it’s important.

Monero (XMR) is digital cash that is private by default. Every transaction hides who sent it, who received it and how much moved, so every coin is identical and can’t be blacklisted. It launched in 2014, has no premine and no company behind it.

02

The Monero Revolution

A deep dive into the history of Monero, its future, challenges and the future of currency.

From CryptoNote and Bytecoin to RingCT, Bulletproofs and the upcoming FCMP++ upgrade, Monero has shipped a decade of privacy research. Its community-funded model means no VC can steer it.

03

How do I buy Monero?

Learn how to get your first Monero in minutes.

Three common routes: buy on an exchange that lists XMR and withdraw; buy BTC/LTC anywhere and swap to XMR; or buy peer-to-peer on RetoSwap. Always withdraw to your own wallet.

04

What is a Monero wallet?

Learn about this vital tool for sending, receiving and storing your Monero.

A wallet holds your keys, not coins. Your 25-word seed phrase is the master backup, write it down on paper or steel and never share it. Popular wallets: Cake Wallet, Feather, Monero GUI, Stack.

05

Where can I spend Monero?

Easily understand where you can spend your Monero.

VPNs, hosting, gift cards, travel, food, electronics and more. Browse 200+ services in the XMR Directory, or spend it in the XMR Hub Shop.

06

What is Monero mining?

Learn how to mine Monero, why it’s important and how anyone can start.

Monero uses RandomX, which is optimised for ordinary CPUs, so ASICs don’t dominate. Run XMRig with P2Pool (or Gupax for a GUI) and you’re helping decentralise the network.

07

How do I receive Monero?

To receive Monero, simply provide the sender your XMR address.

Share a subaddress (starts with 8) for each payer. Funds arrive in ~2 minutes and unlock after 10 confirmations (~20 minutes).

08

How do I send Monero?

Sending Monero is easy: choose the amount and double-check the address.

Paste the address, enter the amount, review the fee (usually under a cent) and send. Always verify the first and last characters of the address.

09

The benefits of Monero

Discover why Monero is going to revolutionise the world.

Privacy, fungibility, low fees, fast settlement, tail emission for long-term security, and a grassroots community that answers to no one.

Interactive course

Learn Monero by playing.

Six bite-sized lessons, each with a quick quiz. Clear them all to earn your Monero Basics badge.

Monero basics, lesson by lesson

  1. What is Monero?. Monero is digital cash for the internet. Like handing someone a banknote, a payment reveals nothing about who you are, who you paid or how much you hold. There's no company behind it and no central ledger anyone can freeze.
  2. Get a wallet. A wallet is the app that holds your keys and lets you send and receive XMR. When you create one it shows a 25-word seed phrase. Those words are your money: write them on paper, keep them offline, and never type them into a website.
  3. Buy your first XMR. Three easy ways in: buy XMR on an exchange and withdraw it, buy any coin and swap it to Monero, or buy peer-to-peer. Whichever you pick, always move the Monero to your own wallet afterwards. Coins left on an exchange aren't really yours.
  4. Send and receive. To receive, share an address that starts with 8 (a subaddress). To send, paste the recipient's address, enter the amount and confirm. Fees are usually a fraction of a cent and funds arrive in a couple of minutes. Always double-check the first and last characters of an address.
  5. Spend privately. Monero isn't just for holding. You can pay for VPNs, hosting, gift cards, travel, food and electronics. Browse hundreds of merchants in the XMR Directory, or buy right here in the XMR Hub shop. Because payments are private, nobody builds a profile of what you buy.
  6. Stay private. Monero hides a lot for you automatically, but habits matter. Keep your coins in a wallet you control, think before you link your real identity to an address you publish, and for maximum privacy you can run your own node so you aren't trusting someone else's server. Small steps, big difference.
For the nerds

Under the hood.

The cryptography and systems that make Monero private, fungible and impossible to switch off. Tap any card for a deeper look.

01

RingCT

Ring signatures hide the sender among decoys while confidential amounts hide the value, with math proving no coins are created from nothing.

Every Monero input is signed as one of a ring of possible spenders (currently 16 decoys), so an observer can't tell which one truly spent. Ring Confidential Transactions, live since 2017, add Pedersen commitments that hide the amounts too, with a range proof guaranteeing each amount is non-negative so the supply can never be secretly inflated.

02

Bulletproofs and Bulletproofs+

Short, fast zero-knowledge range proofs that shrank Monero transactions by around 80% and slashed fees.

Before Bulletproofs, the range proofs that prevent amount inflation were huge. Bulletproofs (2018) replaced them with a logarithmic-size proof, cutting transaction size and fees dramatically. Bulletproofs+ arrived in the v15 hard fork (2022), trimming proof size and verification time even further.

03

RandomX

The CPU-friendly proof-of-work that keeps mining in the hands of ordinary people, not specialised ASIC farms.

RandomX runs random programs in a virtual machine tuned for general-purpose CPUs and their large caches, a workload where custom ASIC and GPU rigs gain little advantage. The result: anyone with a laptop can mine meaningfully, keeping hash power spread across many independent hands.

04

FCMP++

Full-Chain Membership Proofs, Monero’s next major upgrade, replacing decoy rings with a proof against every output ever made.

Today's ring signatures hide you among 16 decoys. Full-Chain Membership Proofs++ instead prove your input belongs to the entire set of outputs on the chain, so the effective anonymity set becomes the whole blockchain. Built on new curve trees, it hugely strengthens sender privacy while keeping proofs practical to verify.

05

View and spend keys

Each wallet has two key pairs: the spend key moves funds, while the view key only sees incoming ones.

Your private spend key authorises spending. Your private view key lets you, or an auditor you choose, detect incoming payments without being able to spend them. This split powers things like a shop watching for payments or sharing a view key for transparency, all while your coins stay safe.

06

Subaddresses

Unlimited addresses from one wallet. Give a fresh one to every payer and nobody can link them, backed up by a single seed.

A subaddress (it starts with 8) is derived from your main account, so funds sent to any of them land in the same wallet and only your 25-word seed is needed to restore everything. Handing out a new subaddress per sender stops outsiders from linking your separate payments together.

07

Running a node

Your own copy of the blockchain. Run one and you verify your own transactions instead of trusting someone else’s server.

monerod downloads and validates the full chain. Pointing your wallet at your own node means you broadcast and confirm transactions without leaking which outputs are yours to a third-party server. It also strengthens the network by relaying blocks and transactions for everyone else.

08

P2Pool

A decentralised mining pool with no operator and no fees, paying out directly to your wallet.

Traditional pools are run by a company that controls payouts and sees its miners' data. P2Pool is a peer-to-peer sidechain: miners share work and get paid directly on-chain, with no central operator, no account and near-zero fees. Together with RandomX it keeps Monero mining genuinely trustless.

The deeper why

What about gold, or state banking?

Every system that challenged central banking has been dismantled, co-opted or crushed. Monero is different. There's no company to subpoena, no CEO to arrest and no ledger to censor. It defends against all of that by design.

CPU power is the vendor’s power limit for the chip (AMD socket power, Intel Maximum Turbo Power): an upper estimate, not a measurement. Real draw while mining is often lower.

New to Monero mining?

What is Monero mining?

Miners use their computer's processor to add a new block to the Monero blockchain about every two minutes. The miner who finds a block is paid the block reward: 0.6 XMR of new coins (Monero's permanent tail emission) plus the fees of the transactions in the block.

Mining is also what keeps Monero secure and decentralised: the more independent people mine, the harder the network is to attack.

Can an ordinary PC mine Monero?

Yes. Monero is built to be mined on ordinary processors, so a desktop or laptop you already own can take part.

Whether it pays depends mostly on your electricity price. On cheap or free power a modern CPU earns a small, steady amount; on expensive power it can cost more than it earns. The calculator above shows which side of that line you are on.

What does RandomX do?

RandomX is Monero's mining algorithm. It makes miners run random programs that need fast memory and general-purpose processing, the work a CPU is good at.

That keeps specialised mining machines (ASICs) from taking over, so ordinary people can mine on equal terms.

Why does the CPU matter so much?

RandomX speed comes from cores, cache and memory. Each mining thread wants about 2 MB of L3 cache, so chips with many cores and a lot of cache do best, which is why AMD Ryzen and EPYC processors lead the benchmarks.

Settings matter too: dual-channel memory, huge pages and the miner's MSR tweak (both need administrator rights) can each add a noticeable share of hashrate. Two identical CPUs can differ by 20% or more.

What is a hashrate?

How many RandomX hashes your computer works out per second, written H/s (1 kH/s is 1,000 H/s). A recent 8-core desktop CPU does roughly 9 to 13 kH/s.

Your expected share of the network's rewards is your hashrate divided by the whole network's hashrate.

How does electricity affect profit?

Electricity cost per day = watts / 1,000 x hours x your price per kWh. A PC drawing 150 W for 24 hours uses 3.6 kWh; at $0.15 per kWh that costs $0.54 a day.

The break-even price in the results is the most you could pay per kWh before mining stops paying for itself. A plug-in power meter at the wall gives the exact wattage of your own PC.

Solo, pool or P2Pool?

Solo mining pays a whole block reward when your computer finds a block. For a single PC that takes months or years on average, and luck decides when.

A pool combines many miners and pays everyone small, regular amounts, minus a fee. P2Pool is a decentralised pool with no operator and no fee that pays straight to your own wallet; it is the option the Monero community encourages, together with solo mining.

How do I start mining safely?

Download XMRig only from xmrig.com or its GitHub page and check the file's hash. Mine to your own Monero wallet address, never an exchange deposit address, and point XMRig at P2Pool or a pool you trust.

Watch your CPU temperature for the first hour. Antivirus programs often flag miners because malware abuses them; that is expected, but never run a miner from a source you do not know. This page never mines in your browser and never uses your processor.
